Data Sources & Attribution Registry

StormDesk aggregates public, partner, and commercial data sources for operational awareness. This page is the canonical inventory for what each source powers, the attribution text it requires, and any restrictions on how StormDesk should use it.

Core Forecast & Severe Weather

StormDesk Use

Forecasts, alerts, observations, hazardous weather outlooks, AFDs, DSS-linked products, and weather maps.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: National Weather Service / NOAA

Restrictions

Operationally authoritative. StormDesk summarizes and republishes source data but does not replace official warning products.

StormDesk Use

Convective outlooks, mesoscale discussions, watches, categorical risk context, and severe-weather product links.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: NOAA Storm Prediction Center

Restrictions

Use official SPC graphics and text for authoritative probabilities. StormDesk timing graphics are generated separately and labeled as non-official.

StormDesk Use

Radar tiles, SPC watch and MD GeoJSON feeds, and storm report archives used in map layers.

License / Posture

Publicly accessible academic/public-service data

Required Attribution

Source: Iowa Environmental Mesonet

Restrictions

Treat as a distribution layer for operational products, not the originating authority.

Hydrology & Flooding

StormDesk Use

River gauge stage, discharge, hydrograph context, and local impact threshold overlays.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: U.S. Geological Survey

Restrictions

StormDesk may add workspace-defined local impact thresholds, but official action and flood-stage coloring remains separate.

StormDesk Use

National drought polygons and county/state drought severity summaries.

License / Posture

USDM courtesy-required data product

Required Attribution

Map courtesy of the U.S. Drought Monitor, produced by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USDA, and NOAA.

Restrictions

Weekly situational-awareness product. Courtesy line should appear anywhere drought maps or summary statistics are surfaced prominently.

StormDesk Use

Backlog target for national flood outlook polygons and rainfall/flood support layers.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: NOAA Weather Prediction Center

Restrictions

Backlog item; add layer-specific attribution before shipping public-facing map use.

Air Quality, Smoke & Fire

StormDesk Use

Official AQI summary and forecast context in StormDesk map and operations surfaces.

License / Posture

Public-sector API with key requirement and attribution requirement

Required Attribution

Air quality data provided by AirNow.

Restrictions

Use as preliminary reference context only in this sprint. Do not treat AirNow as an automated trigger for StormDesk severity scoring or alerting.

StormDesk Use

Live map-native PM2.5 sensor layer for localized AQ detail.

License / Posture

PurpleAir data license / attribution required

Required Attribution

Sensor data courtesy of PurpleAir.

Restrictions

Crowd-sourced sensor network. Display as observational detail, not an official regulatory AQ designation.

StormDesk Use

Smoke plume polygons and smoke-air-quality correlation context.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: NOAA Hazard Mapping System

Restrictions

Interpretive smoke product; pair with AQ and fire sources for operational context.

StormDesk Use

Satellite fire detections and fire-support overlays.

License / Posture

NASA open data / public use

Required Attribution

Source: NASA FIRMS

Restrictions

Hotspots indicate detections, not confirmed incident perimeters or suppression status.

Space Weather & All-Hazards

StormDesk Use

Kp forecast, geomagnetic storm level, and quiet/elevated space-weather status cards.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

Restrictions

Situational-awareness context only in StormDesk v1; not mapped as a geographic operational layer.

StormDesk Use

Backlog target for significant earthquake points and impact context.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program

Restrictions

Backlog item; event significance filtering should be applied before enabling by default.

StormDesk Use

Disaster declarations and all-hazards support datasets.

License / Posture

Public Domain (17 USC § 105)

Required Attribution

Source: OpenFEMA / FEMA

Restrictions

Use for situational context, not incident command authority.

Transportation, Maps & Infrastructure

StormDesk Use

Road conditions, incidents, closures, RWIS, traffic cameras, and construction context.

License / Posture

State government data

Required Attribution

Source: Illinois Department of Transportation

Restrictions

Coverage and freshness depend on IDOT feeds. StormDesk should not imply local authority over state-road decisions.

StormDesk Use

Base maps, satellite streets style, navigation controls, and map rendering.

License / Posture

Commercial license / Mapbox terms

Required Attribution

Map imagery and basemap © Mapbox and OpenStreetMap contributors.

Restrictions

Must follow Mapbox attribution and logo requirements wherever their styles or tiles are displayed.

Attribution Workflow Standard

New StormDesk data layers should not ship until they declare their source, usage, attribution text, and any commercial or operational restrictions. This registry is intended to keep the public-facing product, internal planning, and future backlog work aligned.
